Magic (Anti-Itch) Salve

At the beginning of the summer, my son started complaining about his skin. It was itchy and irritated, and driving him crazy. We had taken a trip to Florida in July which is famously hot, humid and buggy, so I really wasn’t surprised. My skin wasn’t feeling so hot either. In these instances, I normally just give him a massage with coconut oil and that usually does the trick. The mixture of a loving touch and the healing moisture of the oil is a great antidote for whatever ails you.

As the summer progressed the itching continued, and I started to experiment with more natural ingredients to help my son’s predicament, and “Magic Salve” was born. I added Manuka (or Raw Honey), Calendula, Lavender, Tea Tree, and Peppermint for healing and Shea Butter and Beeswax for texture. If you would like this to be a vegan recipe please omit the beeswax.

Rowan loves it. It smells like flowers and mint and works well at bedtime too. The packaging is key, as it makes Rowan feel like I am treating him with some magical fairy cream. It is really an important part of the ritual! Rowan is always asking for a “Magic Salve” treatment, it’s super cute. I repurposed a deep conditioner container that is 3 1/2 inches in diameter for the salve.

Magic “Anti-Itch” Salve

Ingredients

I cup virgin coconut oil

1/2 cup shea butter

1/8 cup beeswax

2 tablespoons raw honey

2 tablespoons calendula oil

15 drops frankincence oil

15 drops lavender oil

10 drops peppermint oil

5 drops tea tree oil

Instructions

In a double boiler on medium heat, melt shea butter and beeswax, turn off heat. Add coconut oil which

will melt and stir. Add Essential oils and stir. Pour into a container, and let cool until firm and opaque.

Notes

You can make this without the beeswax for a vegan result.

This mixture works really well as a soothing daily body oil, but I recommend you omit or greatly reduce the honey. It can give it a slightly sticky feeling.
