Norway

We took a 2 week trip to Norway this past summer, and I was not fully prepared for the stunning grandeur of the Norwegian landscape. We flew into Oslo where we spent a few days. Then, we were on a cruise up the coast to the charming town of Trondheim. From there, we took a 6 hour train ride to Bergen, the capital of the Fjords, and then on to Flam. Finally, we took a ferry through the Fjords where sat open mouthed at  jaw dropping waterways.

The Fjords were created by glaciers in the earth’s last ice age where they cut through the landscape creating steep valleys. It is like taking a boat through the history of the earth and you can’t help, but feel connected to nature in a way that is so intimate. I felt like Mother Nature was my grandmother telling me her secret stories. I felt honored.

Using cardboard and construction paper I made this cardboard collage that does absolutely no justice to the beauty of the country. However, in making it, I was taken back to our trip and the memories came alive, as I cut and painted and played. The practice of creating something while meditating on a memorable trip helped me to relive the beauty and now share it with you.

Our trip was quite busy and a tad chaotic. Since we were taking trains and boats and cruises everywhere there was never a dull moment. Early mornings were met by long train rides and sometimes nauseating! long cruises. I marveled at the coastline of Norway while the dizziness of sea sickness took over my whole body. But through all the business, Norway charmed us. The people are wonderful, direct but warm, practical but adventurous. The scenery, well I can go on an on. We even loved the cold rainy weather, in August! My skin never looked better, and my son would lift his face to the sky letting the raindrops fall cold on his nose.

Norway is the things that fantastical dreams are made of. If I believed in a majestic heaven with angels and fairies and rainbows, then Norway would definitely be it. Thank you beautiful country for your warm (well cold and rainy!) hospitality.

“Once a year go somewhere you have never been before.”—Dalai Lama

I feel gratitude for being able to take my son to places like Norway. As a child I always enjoyed family trips. My childhood trips involved mostly Disney World and Sanibel Island in home state of Florida peppered with a trip to Jamaica and New York City to visit my grandmother. Travel was a time to breathe out and explore, to feel new and different. I am grateful for that.

Flashback to a fun craft that my son loved when we were reading “Go Dog Go”, by Dr. Seuss. He was so into race cars, and this book was so cute. I loved it too. I miss those days! We made little cars out of toilet roll and I made some cute decals to give them that extra race car look.
This Sun + Rainbows Blocks free printable was inspired by spring. The out of the ordinary rain we have been getting has been resulting in some epic rainbow sightings. On the morning school drive, we saw one floating over the highway which made the epic California traffic seem almost pretty.
